An SPD acts as a dynamic, voltage-dependent switch connected in parallel with the electrical circuit:
Normal Operation (High Impedance): Under standard operating voltage, the SPD remains in a high-impedance (non-conductive) state, drawing virtually no power and remaining invisible to the electrical system.
Surge Event (Low Impedance Trigger): When a transient overvoltage occurs and exceeds the SPD's clamping threshold voltage (Vc), the device rapidly switches to a low-impedance (conductive) state within nanoseconds.
Diverting Excess Energy: The SPD safely redirects the excess surge current away from sensitive equipment down to the ground system (PE) or neutral line.
Automatic Reset: As soon as the transient event passes and line voltage returns to normal levels, the SPD instantly reverts to its high-impedance state, restoring standard system operation seamlessly.

Transient overvoltages—commonly known as voltage surges or spikes—are brief, high-energy voltage fluctuations that significantly exceed standard operating limits. They are typically caused by:
External factors: Direct or indirect lightning strikes and utility grid switching operations.

1. Zero Degradation from Continuous Line Leakage
The Problem with Standard MOVs: Standard MOVs are connected continuously to the power line. Over time, normal line voltage causes micro-leakage currents through the MOV, accelerating internal heat buildup, component degradation, and eventual premature failure.
The Hybrid Solution: By placing a GDT in series with a TFMOV, the GDT acts as an absolute open switch during normal operating voltage. It completely blocks leakage current from reaching the MOV, drastically extending the operational lifespan of the device.

Follow-Current Mitigation: Standalone GDTs can sometimes suffer from follow-current (where power line current continues to flow through the ionized gas arc after the surge passes).
